As a homebirth midwife, I believe in the innate ability of women to give birth under their own power. That power is especially fueled if they are surrounded by a loving support system. As well, good nutrition, adequate exercise and enough rest all aid a woman's ability to have a healthy pregnancy, a good birth and a healthy baby. Midwifery care is instrumental in making certain all of the above elements are in place, thus facilitating empowering birth experiences for women and their families.
I received my education through the Association of Texas Midwives Midwifery Program and have been a midwife for four years. I started my own midwifery practice in Austin, TX in 2005. I am a current member of ATM and the Midwives Association of North America. I have three children, two born at home, who have all inspired me in their own ways to become a better midwife. Currently, in addition to practicing midwifery, I am also teaching birth classes to couples planning out-of-hospital births. I have been teaching these classes for six years and I really enjoy it.
My services include all aspects of prenatal care, labor and delivery attendance and postpartum care up to six weeks after the birth. I usually bring one very experienced apprentice or another midwife with me plus another apprentice to each birth. I do have physician back-up in case of emergencies during births or in the case of a woman who becomes too high-risk to have a homebirth and I do not hesitate to use it if it becomes necessary.
Homebirth does require an increased responsibility and commitment on the part of the birthing parents. However, families who choose homebirth also have the opportunity to create their own beautiful and unique birth expereince in their own home. I am honored to serve families who choose this way to bring their babies into the world.
